how fast is "fast"? 200? 300? why not 750 mph? in unpopulated areas, why not go supersonic? that may be asking too much. but why not push 750 mph and actualy give the airline industry a run for their money. first off, the high speed trains that exist now, areodynamicly will not cut it. second, maglev is the only way to go, with retractable high speed truck sets. and third and most immortantly, there needs to be a new transcontinental railway. with private companies creating a partnership, within 3 years there could be a ny, chicago, la running several trips a day. it will take a long time to recover the investment, but it is an investment in the future of domestic transportation, both passenger and freight.
